If you’ve already read our guides on what biological age means and how to estimate it from Apple Health, you know the composite number is useful — and incomplete. Two people can share the same bio age for opposite reasons: one with elite VO₂ max and mediocre sleep, another with solid sleep and a suppressed HRV profile.

Longevity Signals exist to stop you chasing the wrong lever. In Metrya Pro they run entirely on-device from HealthKit. No AI key. No upload. Three named metrics you can act on.

"Bio age tells you the score. Longevity Signals tell you which system is losing."

Bio Age vs Longevity Signals

Composite
Biological age
One estimate blending cardio fitness, autonomic markers, sleep, body composition, and activity. Great for trends; easy to misinterpret if you don’t know which factor moved.
Diagnostic lenses
Longevity Signals
Three separate scores — Autonomic Age, Fitness Age, Sleep Longevity Risk — so you can see which dimension is aging faster and what habit to change first.

Signal 1 — Autonomic Age (HRV)

Autonomic Age translates your heart rate variability into an age-like estimate using age/sex norms and your own history. HRV reflects how flexibly your autonomic nervous system shifts between stress and recovery. Persistently low HRV relative to peers (and to your baseline) pulls Autonomic Age upward even if you feel “fine.”

Primary input
Overnight HRV from Apple Watch / HealthKit, interpreted against norms and personal baseline.
What raises it
Chronic stress load, poor sleep debt payoff, illness, alcohol clusters, under-recovery from hard training.
How to improve
Protect sleep consistency, manage training load with a recovery score, cut late stimulants, build aerobic base patiently.

Signal 2 — Fitness Age (VO₂ max)

Fitness Age maps cardiorespiratory fitness — mainly VO₂ max from Apple Watch outdoor walks/runs — to the chronological age that fitness level typically belongs to. It’s one of the strongest longevity-linked signals in consumer wearables when the estimate is fresh and the outdoor efforts are honest.

Signal 3 — Sleep Longevity Risk

Sleep Longevity Risk scores duration and efficiency against ranges linked with long-term health outcomes. It’s not “how tired you felt.” You can feel energetic on chronically short or fragmented sleep while the risk score still flags a pattern associated with worse population outcomes.

Pair it with your sleep stages view: short total sleep with crushed deep/REM is a different problem than long time-in-bed with poor efficiency. Also watch lifestyle confounders — late caffeine, heat, and allergens can all push this signal without changing your “discipline.”

Signal Asks First lever if it’s the worst
Autonomic Age Is my nervous system recovering? Sleep debt, stress load, training intensity, alcohol
Fitness Age Is my engine fit for my years? Consistent aerobic training + occasional hard efforts
Sleep Longevity Risk Is my sleep pattern sustainable? Duration, regularity, efficiency, bedtime environment

How to Use the Trio Without Obsessing

1
Pick the worst signal
Don’t try to optimise all three this month. Fix the outlier first — it’s usually the one you can feel in daily energy within weeks.
2
Change one habit cluster
For Autonomic: recovery days + bedtime. For Fitness: weekly Zone 2 minutes. For Sleep: fixed wake time + caffeine cut-off.
3
Re-check on a 4-week trend
Daily noise is real. Longevity Signals earn trust on multi-week slopes, same as bio age.
4
Ask “why” with context
Optional AI Advisor can use these signals as context — but the scores themselves never need a key.
On-device by design: Autonomic Age, Fitness Age, and Sleep Longevity Risk are computed on your iPhone from Apple Health. They do not require an AI API key. Only conversational explanation via the Advisor uses BYOK if you enable it.

What Longevity Signals Are Not

Avoid bio-age cannibalisation: Use the composite biological age for the headline trend. Use Longevity Signals when you need a diagnosis of which system to train. If both views agree you’re drifting older, start with the worst of the three — don’t invent a fourth metric.

Putting It Together

Longevity Signals turn Apple Health from a warehouse of charts into three decisions: protect the autonomic system, build the aerobic engine, or repair sleep. They’re the actionable layer beneath biological age — private, on-device, and specific enough that “get healthier” becomes “add Zone 2” or “fix the 1am bedtime.”
